Many mainstream experts in nutrition now agree that humans can be exceedingly healthy on a well-balanced vegan diet. This is true for all stages of life, including pregnancy and lactation; from infancy right through to adulthood.
In 2009 the prestigious Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics published their official position on the health benefits of veganism and each week new studies come to light about the dangers of consuming animal products. One such study is the recent report by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) linking processed meat to colorectal cancer. The findings of this report will now see processed meats listed under the highest category of carcinogens, along with substances such as asbestos and tobacco.
It’s not only scientists who are challenging the worn-out stereotype of the weak, malnourished vegan: many of the world’s top athletes are now ditching animal products in favour of a plant-based diet, allowing them to reach their fullest potential.
